A family bakery · Plympton · since 2006

Plympton's bakery, two counters, one workshop, since 2006.

Susan and Kelvin Lock opened the Ridgeway shop in 2006 as St Stephen's Bakery. Stacey and Sam Millard, Stacey being Susan's daughter, took it over in August 2017 and rebranded it Yield in 2022. Some of the cakes still on the counter today come off Stacey's grandmother's recipes, untouched.

Daily bakes, celebration cakes, and two counters to pick them up from.

All four come out of one production kitchen at Lister Close, shuttled to Ridgeway and Plymbridge five to six times a day. Same hands, same recipes, two postcodes.

BAKED EACH MORNING · LISTER CLOSE WORKSHOP

Daily bakes

Handmade pasties in three sizes, cream splits, jam and custard doughnuts, gingerbreads, cornflake nests, sausage rolls and meat patties. Made by hand at the Lister Close workshop, no preservatives, no freezing. The Ridgeway counter has fresh stock five to six times a day, on a shuttle Stacey's father has been running himself since 2017.

CUSTOM BAKES · BIRTHDAYS, WEDDINGS, AT-SHORT-NOTICE

Celebration cakes

Birthday cakes, wedding tiers, custom bakes. Two of our 2025 Food Drink Devon medals were for these sweet lines: a Platinum for the almond slice, a Gold for the cinnamon buns. The third Platinum, for bread pudding, still comes off Stacey's grandmother's recipe untouched. Drop a request on the form below or call ahead.

The Ridgeway counter

Our original shop, opened in 2006 as St Stephen's Bakery. Refurbished top to bottom in 2025. The Bakers Lounge next door has eat-in seats, freshly ground coffee, sandwiches, salads, wraps and bagels, plus gluten-free and vegan options out of a separate kitchen built in 2019. Walk-ins always welcome.

The Plymbridge counter

A second counter, opened in 2025 inside Plymbridge Stores convenience shop at 48 Plymbridge Road, PL7 4QF. Same bakes, same shuttle from Lister Close, longer trading hours (Mon to Sat). Three minutes off the A38 and tucked behind the Heles School fields, so the morning before-school crowd can grab a pasty without driving to Ridgeway.

Our story · two generations

From Susan and Kelvin in 2006, to Stacey and Sam in 2017.

In July 2006, Susan and Kelvin Lock bought a Plympton bakery on Ridgeway and traded it as St Stephen's Bakery. Susan had been a social worker. Kelvin had been a mechanic. They built the shop into a Ridgeway fixture over the next decade.

In November 2015, Susan asked her daughter Stacey, then an occupational therapist, and Sam, then ten years in motor-home sales, whether they would take the shop on. Two years later, in August 2017, Stacey and Sam Millard quit their day jobs and took over. Kelvin still does the shuttle from the Lister Close workshop to the Ridgeway counter himself, five or six times a day.

Some of the cakes still in the cabinet today come straight off Stacey's grandmother's recipes, untouched, including the bread pudding that won Platinum at the 2025 Food Drink Devon Awards. We renamed the shop Yield in 2022 when the Lister Close production HQ opened, because it had outgrown one shopfront.

What we are uncommonly good at

A workshop, a shuttle, and two counters that never hold yesterday's stock.

We are a Plympton bakery that runs like a producer. The production kitchen at Lister Close is built out to commercial standard. The Bakers Lounge next door to the Ridgeway shop has a second commercial kitchen, added in 2019, used only for gluten-free and vegan lines so the wheat line stays clean. Kelvin shuttles the fresh tray from Lister Close to the Ridgeway counter five or six times a day. The Plymbridge Stores counter, added in 2025, shares the same shuttle.

  • Lister Close workshopThe production HQ since June 2022. Built out to commercial-kitchen spec. Where every pastie, every cake and every cinnamon bun is made.
  • Bakers Lounge kitchenOpened July 2019 next door to the Ridgeway shop. A separate commercial kitchen for gluten-free and vegan, away from the main wheat line.
  • The 5-to-6-a-day shuttleRun by Kelvin himself, Tuesday to Saturday. The Ridgeway counter never holds anything baked before that morning.
  • Grandmother's bread puddingRecipe untouched. Won Platinum at the 2025 Food Drink Devon Awards. Scaling it up is the only thing we will not do.

Five things people ask before they order

Worth answering up front.

Are the pasties really better than the Cornish ones?

Tripadvisor consensus over 142 reviews at 4.8 stars: yes. Made by hand at the Lister Close workshop, no preservatives, no freezing. Fillings from local growers and butchers. Shuttle to the Ridgeway counter five to six times a day, so what you buy in the afternoon was on a tray at 8am, not last Tuesday.

Can you do a custom or birthday cake at short notice?

Yes, often. Drop a request on the form on this page or call 01752 330330 with the date, party size and rough idea. We do most birthday cakes inside a week, and most custom celebration cakes inside ten days. Wedding tiers want at least three weeks for the consult and the bake.

Are you the same place as St Stephen's Bakery?

Yes. Susan and Kelvin Lock opened the Ridgeway shop in 2006 as St Stephen's Bakery. Stacey and Sam Millard took it over in August 2017 and rebranded to Yield Bakery in 2022 when the production HQ at Lister Close opened. Same family, same recipes, same shop next door to Iceland on Ridgeway.

Do you cater for gluten-free or vegan?

Yes. Since July 2019 the Bakers Lounge next door to the Ridgeway shop has had a separate commercial kitchen for our gluten-free and vegan lines, away from the main wheat line. Please mention any coeliac requirement when you order so we can flag it.

Where do I order for delivery?

Delivery runs Tuesday and Thursday only, to PL1 to PL9 (restrictions in western PL8). Fifteen pound minimum, three pound fee, orders in by noon the day before, drop-off window 14:30 to 17:30. Place the order through the contact form on this page or call the Ridgeway counter on 01752 330330.
